Website redesign and improved user experience to promote effective prevention of torture

The Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) is an international non-governmental organisation based in Geneva, Switzerland. Aiming to establish a global system to prevent torture, APT develops legal instruments, advocates for preventive mechanisms and provides various resources and techniques.

Challenge
Sharing the accumulated knowledge
APT wanted to renew their website so that it better reflects their vision and approach. During their 40 years of operation, the organization has developed a set of methodologies and resources that helped people get a better understanding of the various mechanisms of torture prevention; however, it was not the easiest to find the relevant information on their website. Beyond the improvement of the website’s structure and implementing a new, responsive design, another key priority of the project was the reorganization and visual refreshment of their online Knowledge Hub.

Solution
Structural and visual renewal inside and out
As the APT team had been aspiring to create a more user-friendly content structure and interface for a long time before reaching out to us, the actual development work was preceded by months of consultation with the client.
This phase was definitely worth the investment, as we managed to define all major structural changes before any code was written.
This, in return, has led to a thorough understanding among team members which made the development part particularly smooth and cost effective. We could dramatically reduce the number of paragraphs they used on the website: from 90+ to a dozen. Moreover, as part of the profound restructuring of their Knowledge Hub, we introduced new navigation elements, which significantly enhanced both the editorial and user experience. As for the visual design, we managed to find the right balance between making a very serious subject more digestible without losing the feeling of professionalism.
