Hun­gari­an Or­ni­tho­lo­gic­al and Nature Con­ser­va­tion So­ci­ety

Founded nearly 40 years ago with 200 members, the Hungarian Ornithological Society (MME) has become the largest nature conservation society in Central and Eastern Europe, with around 10 000 members and thousands of volunteers.

Task

MME's previous website was built on Drupal 7 for almost a decade, so it needed to be revamped in every respect. Although the site was stable, it was difficult to manage the vast amount of content and media, and the site structure was rigid and could not keep up with the dynamic growth of the organisation, for example, it did not adequately support communication with the increasingly active local groups. 

In the face of an ever-widening and highly diverse range of information, it was also becoming increasingly difficult for website visitors to find relevant content. In addition, an exciting new project, the MME Academy, was the inspiration for the relaunch of the website, which was to feature the organisation's own online training materials.

Solution

The first priority of the project was to develop the Academy. We had already begun development of the training system and interfaces, when at the same time we were in lengthy discussions to restructure the old website.

In addition to the large amount of previous content, we had to find space for a number of new or even long-standing initiatives. 

The new site features a complex, multi-colour navigation system (tabbed menu bar, sidebar, table of contents) to help users find their way around more easily. The structure of the MME Academy is entirely built on the Drupal framework, with online courses from beginner to advanced level, providing learning opportunities for nature lovers.
