According to a Czech proverb, the term ‘going out for a beer’ is a notion assuming the consumption of at least five points. Anything below that is mere re-hydration by lager. Well, the IV team has performed to the norm every evening.

Hundreds of people are awaiting Dries’s presentation. In the first line, dolphins equipped with microphones rock their hips, signaling that this is not just any conference, but the Mecca of Drupalists. In the front lines, people embrace from time to time; communal euphoria takes it all.
Wow, it’s begun. Carrots toddle on stage, but they sound excellent. Wunderkraut ad spot with well-aligned voices. Well done.
Das keynote: We are changing the world
Presenting for 1700 people must be a challenge. Even the Drupal dare-devil might have had knots in his stomach when he saw where he had to deliver the message. He coped with the task splendidly. He managed to distract my attention from the screen in no time. In the beginning, I tried to stay online, but then I closed the display to leave networking to others.
In the first half of the presentation, the man with the flag posed the question “why we’re doing it?” He then gave possible answers like from providing for the family to as far as stating that “we are changing the world.” He has built the train of thought as good taste dictates, but I missed passion, story, and the emotional factor that brings the lofty sentence into human reach.
He then outlined what everyone was interested in: what’s up with Drupal 8. While we were tasting the feature-candies, he gave the word to the representatives of the six main areas – from Gábor Hojtsy to Daniel Wehner, from multilingualism to views. They told us in recorded Skype videos the summary of why we should join their toil. Goba was in top form, as always.

Can you spot the irregularity in the image? Do you think it’s an intentional media hack, or what? ☺
Das community
Dries’ talent to form community has proven itself again. He summarized and fed back regularly. Instead of reaping the rewards like Steve, he slightly stepped back and showed the faces who had done the majority of the jobs, fulfilling strategic roles in product development. For example, he highlighted the new web-star, Alex Pott, the hot-shot of Drupal core. That’s the way to do it! No hypnosis, no abracadabra, simple feedback. To summarize it:
“Not the technology, but the community is the real value of Drupal.” — Dries Buytaert.
On the way out, I asked my mate M. about how he liked the presentation. “He didn’t say anything new,” the answer came in plain Hungarian, suggesting he was expecting more. Yes, indeed, but: it is precisely this attitude of supporting and watching closely from the sideline that has made Drupal what it is. An excellent community platform.
Thank you, Dries!
