Challenge

Transitioning from a Unified System to Two Specialized Platforms

The former website of the Hungarian Mining and Geological Service (MBFSZ) was launched back in 2017, built on Drupal 7. Over the years, the portal served a wide range of needs—providing both scientific and informational content for the general public, while also fulfilling professional functions essential for stakeholders in the geosciences and mining sectors. However, due to organizational restructuring, it became necessary to renew the portal and transition from a single site to two separate, dedicated domains.

The aim of the new structure is to more effectively serve the distinct needs of different target audiences: one portal, hugeo.hu, compiles geological and geophysical scientific content, educational materials, and related information and applications, while the Mining Map application provides a platform for the professional audience to upload and manage digital records.

Solution

Ensuring Operational Stability and a Seamless Transition

It was essential to develop the two applications in parallel to ensure uninterrupted operations and a smooth transition from the old website.

In the implementation of the HuGeo website, special attention was paid to providing editors with a simple and intuitive structure, enabling them to create content entirely from scratch.

The system allows for the easy placement and customization of various content blocks, so editors were able to build the desired structures quickly and cost-effectively, arranging images, text, related content, and other elements in diverse layouts. The well-thought-out visual design ensures that related content linking to subsystems is easily accessible and clearly presented, thereby enhancing user experience and the portal’s overall functionality.

In developing the Mining Map, our primary goal was to make previously stored data easily accessible without modifications, while improving processes and administrative efficiency. The new system enabled straightforward searchability and navigation of existing data, allowing users to quickly and accurately access the information they need.

Throughout the development process, we considered usability, scalability, and fast data handling to ensure that the portals can effectively serve both professionals and the interested public in the long term.
