Ariadne

Unearthing grey literature of history

As part of the ARIADNE EU project, the goal of this site is to support research, education, and learning by making archaeological documentation—otherwise only available offline—accessible online. The database was developed within the framework of the ARIADNE program, which brings together 24 archaeological and heritage institutions from 16 countries.

With developing archedatabase.mnm.hu, we have created the country’s first public archaeological database. It currently contains about 64,000 sites, 1.3 million files, and 6.8 million searchable terms, all displayed on an interactive map. Both the database and its functionality are continuously expanding.

The Hungarian National Museum's Archaeological Database not only includes basic information about archaeological sites but also offers extensive documentation—such as excavation reports, artifact analyses, and a wide variety of other types of archaeological documentation. This vast amount of data is searchable by multiple criteria and accessible according to user permissions. Registered users can search the documentation of thousands of archaeological sites and manage alerts based on selected keywords.

Our team implemented a Drupal-based application capable of managing several terabytes of data. The Hungarian portal provides data to the common European infrastructure as well.
