EN­NHRI Rule of Law

The European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI) is a network of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) that supports and strengthens NHRIs in their work protecting and promoting human rights across Europe. The organisation focuses on key areas such as human rights protection, the rule of law and strengthening democracy.

Challenge

Bringing static PDF reports online in a filterable, comparable format

ENNHRI compiles and publishes country reports from European NHRIs on their national rule of law situations. Previously, these were only available in PDF format. The aim was to create an interactive, searchable and comparable online platform where national reports can be filtered and compared by year, country and topic.

The solution had to fit in with the look and feel of ENNHRI's existing WordPress website, while also providing a separate, customisable technical platform for future extensibility.

Solution

Building a sub-site that integrates visually and functionally with ENNHRI’s main site

The project involved the development of a standalone Drupal-based sub-site that was visually and functionally integrated with ENNHRI's main site. The new Rule of Law Tool allows:

• filter annual country reports by year, country and topic,
• compare reports from multiple countries and years at the same time,
• access and browse the reports in a clearer, more user-friendly format and structure,
• and export selected views in PDF format, supporting offline use and sharing of documents.

The interface has been designed with a clean visual appearance that follows ENNHRI's design guidelines and an easy-to-use administration interface for non-technical users. Although the tool is backed by a standalone system, visitors to the WordPress-based main site will have seamless access to the new features.

The project has resulted in a transparent, extensible tool that effectively supports ENNHRI's goals of documenting and raising the visibility of the rule of law in Europe.
