Code gardening

Kódkertészet

It is like how a gardener takes care of the area he is responsible for - said BT.

There is a need for someone aware of the code, who understands why something happened the way it did. This person defines the place of the new plants and cleans the garden from weeds and old plants.

Besides the code gardener, there is also a need for a team. They are those experts who implement the details. They are responsible for the details, but it is worth having an experienced developer who can take care of and manage the whole picture.

Asrob expressed at the last company demo that his field (DevOps) doesn't produce spectacular things, but this time he brought something exciting. He opened his Macbook and shot the history of Speakerhub's source-code on the wall with a single movement. We stared fascinated by the rolling fractals surrounded by flying bees.

In the last three years, 13 persons participated actively in developing speakerhub.com. The video shows its contribution to the source code. I think this is like a scale-free network. It is visible how Vince, in the beginning, took care of the details, and later on, Tomi and István worked on it with significant intensity, while the others periodically contributed with some specific information. We have some outstanding active people, who work on the whole fractal, and more who provide focus on particular details and only touch some right accrued branches of the source code on definite intervals.

It is how we do our gardening.
